Switching Partners

Your Dynamics 365 Partner Went Unresponsive? How to Regain Control

When a Dynamics 365 partner becomes unresponsive, the scary part is usually the feeling that they hold the keys — admin access, licensing, and the only knowledge of how things were built.

The good news: it is your tenant, your data, and your licensing. Here's how to confirm that and take back control in a calm, orderly way.

You might be seeing

  • Support tickets and emails go unanswered for weeks
  • Your partner holds Global Administrator or the only admin accounts
  • You're unsure whether you or the partner owns your licenses
  • No documentation was ever handed over
  • You feel stuck because 'only they know how it works'

Confirm you own your tenant and data

Your Microsoft 365 / Dynamics 365 tenant belongs to your organization, not the partner. Your data is yours and can be exported at any time.

Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with a Global Administrator account for your organization. If you don't have one, that is the first thing to resolve.

Regain Global Administrator access

If the partner controls the only admin account, Microsoft has a documented process for a tenant owner to regain administrative control. This is exactly the situation it exists for.

Once you have your own Global Administrator, you can see every user, license, and admin role in the tenant.

Understand your licensing relationship (CSP)

Many partners resell Microsoft licenses through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program. If yours does, you can transfer your subscriptions to a different partner — or to a direct Microsoft agreement — without losing the environment.

Check whether your licenses are billed by the partner or directly by Microsoft; that determines your fastest path to independence.

Document before you cut ties

Before ending the relationship, capture everything you can while any access still works: solution exports, flow definitions, integration details, and a list of custom code.

A short assessment at this stage protects you from surprises after the handoff and gives a new partner what they need to step in quickly.

Plan an orderly transition

With ownership confirmed and the environment documented, transitioning to a new partner is routine. Reassign admin roles, move the CSP relationship, and hand over knowledge in a controlled sequence.

You do not have to rebuild anything — you're transferring stewardship of a system you already own.

Frequently asked

Can my partner lock me out of my own Dynamics 365?

They can hold administrative access, but they cannot legitimately lock the tenant owner out permanently. Microsoft provides a process for the owning organization to regain Global Administrator control of its own tenant.

Do I own my Dynamics 365 data if the partner built everything?

Yes. The data in your environment belongs to your organization regardless of who built the customizations, and it can be exported at any time.

How disruptive is switching Dynamics 365 partners?

Much less than people fear. Because you keep the same tenant, environment, and data, switching is primarily a transfer of admin access, the CSP licensing relationship, and knowledge — not a reimplementation.
